Archaeology is the scientific study of the physical evidence of past human societies recovered through excavation. In Ontario, humans have occupied and been altering the landscape for more than 11,000 years. As most of this time was recorded through oral tradition, the purpose of archaeology is to collect physical evidence left behind in order to help provide a better understanding of the past.

In order to provide a complete cost estimate and schedule, CAGI requires detailed information regarding the project such as size of the project area, location (address, lot/concession/township), description of the project area (low-lying and wet, treed, previous disturbance, etc.), deadlines, etc.

The Ministry tries to review reports as soon as possible; howeverver due to high volume of reports submitted, it can take months for a review officer to review a file. Currently the Ministry is not able to provide a time frame for report review. Once the Ministry is satisfied with an archaeological report, they will issue a “Satisfaction Letter”. If you require a letter from the Ministry for your project by a specific date, it is recommended to submit a request for an expedited review.
